PHS Wants to Give the Arnold Family the Headstone they Deserve

UPDATE: We have received many generous donations and have met our goal to purchase the family marker! We thank everyone and will announce when a ceremony will take place in the Spring!

Recently, Poland Historical Society trustee Dave Smith discovered that the Arnold family of eight has no marker in Riverside Cemetery. The deaths of this African American family occurred between 1885 and 1940 and no permanent marker was ever placed. One member of the family, Alfred Arnold, went to school with future president "Bill" McKinley and was elected the first constable of Poland in 1915.

Dave Smith was interviewed by J.T. Whitehouse of The Vindicator with more information about this family. Click on the image to be taken to for the website version of the article.
